Israeli Parliament Approves Law to Withhold Palestinian Tax Revenues

(MENAFN) The Israeli Knesset has approved legislation allowing the deduction of funds from Palestinian clearance revenues, a move that could further strain the Palestinian Authority’s already fragile financial situation, according to reports.

Clearance revenues refer to taxes collected on goods imported into Palestinian territories, whether from Israel or through border crossings under Israeli control, which are then transferred to the Palestinian Authority.

Since 2019, Israel has periodically deducted portions of these funds under various justifications, a practice that has contributed to a prolonged fiscal crisis and has at times prevented the Palestinian Authority from fully paying public sector salaries.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Knesset said its plenary had approved the bill in its second and third readings on Monday, effectively turning the proposal into law.

The legislation authorizes the deduction of specified amounts from funds transferred annually to the Palestinian Authority, with the sums to be determined by Israel’s Ministerial Committee for National Security Affairs based on a report submitted by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, according to the statement.
