US envoy expects new steps on Trump’s Gaza ceasefire plan

(MENAFN) US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz said Wednesday that he expects “upcoming” announcements on advancing President Donald Trump’s ceasefire plan in Gaza. Speaking after a meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Waltz described last month’s UN Security Council resolution on the plan as “probably the most positive resolution we’ve seen for Israel, for stability in the region.”

Waltz outlined key components of the plan, including a technocratic Palestinian authority to restore basic services such as water, gas, and sewage in Gaza, a funding mechanism to support these services, and an international stabilization force to ensure security. He said these elements would be part of announcements expected soon.

President Herzog emphasized the need for speedy implementation, warning that delays in the Middle East allow regional actors like Iran and its proxies to regroup. He voiced hope that the process “will not take too long” to maintain momentum on the resolution.

The US Mission to the UN said Waltz and Herzog also discussed maintaining maximum pressure on Iran to prevent destabilization and agreed on the importance of moving quickly to ensure Hamas is demilitarized and excluded from Gaza’s future governance. Both leaders pledged to collaborate on combating antisemitism and anti-Israel bias at the UN.

The ceasefire, part of Trump’s plan, took effect on Oct. 10, halting two years of Israeli attacks that have killed more than 70,000 people and injured nearly 171,000, mostly women and children, since October 2023. Phase one of the agreement includes the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, reconstruction of Gaza, and the establishment of a new governing mechanism without Hamas.
