Protesters march in Geneva to demand Palestinian self-determination

(MENAFN) Thousands of demonstrators peacefully marched through Geneva on Saturday to express solidarity with the Palestinian people, marking the International Day of Solidarity while calling for concrete action and accountability, according to reports.

The “Big Geneva Protest,” organized by the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, began at the English Garden near Lake Geneva and proceeded to the front of the UN Geneva Office, where the demonstration concluded.

Under police supervision, participants chanted slogans including “Free Palestine,” “Palestine will be free from the river to the sea,” “Israel to court,” “Stop the war crimes,” and “Boycott Israel,” while waving Palestinian flags and carrying banners criticizing Israeli policies.

Protesters demanded Palestinian self-determination, emphasizing that lasting peace cannot be achieved without “justice and decolonization.” They highlighted human rights violations, called for prosecution of illegal attacks by Israeli settlers in the West Bank, and demanded an end to what they described as the ongoing extermination of the Palestinian people.

Demonstrators also criticized Switzerland for remaining silent on the situation in Gaza, urging the government in Bern to “end your military collaboration with Israel” and stating that “Switzerland's silence is complicity.”

Anne-Marie Costa, a Swiss-Spanish participant, told Anadolu that the “genocide” continues under the ceasefire and highlighted government inaction. She said, “I am here because the situation in Gaza is obviously catastrophic. Not only does the genocide continue, but governments are doing nothing.”

Costa added, “For two years, we have been seeing horrific images that keep us awake at night. So it is only natural that we are here to denounce the crimes that humanity, the entire world, is committing at the government level.”
