UN Security Council Endorses New Framework for Gaza

(MENAFN) The UN Security Council has endorsed a resolution prepared by the United States that forms a new interim Board of Peace (BoP) and sanctions an International Stabilization Force (ISF) to supervise administration, rebuilding, and safety operations throughout the Gaza Strip.

The measure passed with 13 affirmative votes, while China and Russia chose to abstain.

Before the vote, US representative to the UN Mike Waltz addressed the Council, declaring that "today, we have the power to douse the flames and light a path to peace."

He emphasized that "that path is the draft UN Security Council resolution before us -- a bold, pragmatic blueprint born from President (Donald) Trump's 20-point comprehensive plan to end the Gaza conflict, forged in the fires of diplomacy with Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Türkiye, Pakistan and Indonesia."

Waltz explained that the resolution "charts a possible pathway for Palestinian self-determination after the Palestinian Authority has completed the necessary reforms, where rockets will give way to olive branches and there is a chance on the political horizon."

Reflecting on prior worries raised within the Council as well as Russia’s "counter-draft," he argued that "We hear concerns over mandates, but colleagues' hesitation here is the true enemy."

Following the vote, Waltz praised the decision, stating it "represents another significant step towards a stable Gaza."
