Israeli Authorities Detain Military Legal Officials

(MENAFN) Israeli law enforcement apprehended outgoing Military Advocate General Yifat Tomer-Yerushalm and retired Colonel Matan Solomesh, the former chief military prosecutor, amid an investigation into the leak of a video depicting Israeli soldiers violently assaulting a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman military prison in southern Israel, local media reported on Monday.

Tomer-Yerushalm was taken into custody on allegations of obstruction of justice and breach of trust, according to an Israeli public broadcaster.

She underwent questioning on charges of hindering the inquiry, leaking classified documents, and providing false statements after being connected to the release of the footage.

Authorities assert she deceived two chiefs of staff, the Supreme Court, defendants, and the public.

The broadcaster noted that messages and testimonies in police possession suggest Solomesh was aware that Tomer-Yerushalm was responsible for the leak but neglected to report it when an internal investigation was initiated.

A daily newspaper reported that the Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court decided to prolong the military prosecutor’s detention by three days.

Judge Shelly Kotin stated that the allegations against Tomer-Yerushalm encompass “fraud and breach of trust, abuse of power, obstruction of justice and disclosure of information by a public servant.”

She further added, “The duration of the investigation, the personal circumstances of the suspect and the findings of the initial examination indicate that the investigation should be allowed to continue while she remains in custody.”
