Italian Artists Urge Government Support for UN Palestine Envoy
(MENAFN) A collective of well-known Italian creatives, performers, and thinkers has appealed to national leaders to show support for Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
Albanese, who holds Italian nationality, was recently targeted by U.S. sanctions due to her critical position regarding the situation between Israel and Palestine.
The public appeal, framed in an open letter, was directed at President Sergio Mattarella, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.
Nearly 80 individuals endorsed the letter, calling on Italy's top officials to defend Albanese in light of what they describe as unfair punishment "for fulfilling her UN mandate."
This appeal was spearheaded by Tlon, a cultural initiative focused on spreading social and philosophical awareness.
The letter urged Italian authorities to advocate for the prompt removal of the U.S. sanctions and to ensure Albanese's safety and freedom to carry out her responsibilities.
It further pressed the government to back a parliamentary motion aimed at granting her formal diplomatic protection.
"Remaining silent on Gaza is complicity," the statement emphasized, highlighting the urgency of actively observing the crisis in Gaza.
It also underscored the need to bolster humanitarian, cultural, and legal efforts that uphold Palestinian rights, while striving for a just resolution rooted in international legal standards.
The list of signatories includes some of Italy's most celebrated film figures, such as Pierfrancesco Favino, Paola Cortellesi, Stefano Accorsi, Valeria Golino, Luca Zingaretti, Valerio Mastandrea, and Claudio Santamaria.
